A Brief History of Chang Gung University
Our school was established in April 1987 as the Chang Gung Medical College, and at that time had a mission of training outstanding medical personnel. The recruiting of students began during July of the same year, and a ceremony commemorating the founding of the school and the beginning of classes was held on September 19. To meet the needs of the country's economic development, we later added departments and graduate schools of engineering and management, enabling us to broaden our instructional resources and turn out talented workers in medicine, engineering, and management. Our engineering and management have accepted students since 1993, at which time the Ministry of Education permitted us to change our name to Chang Gung College of Medicine and Technology. After adding more departments in the subsequent years, the Ministry of Education formally approved our upgrading and name change to Chang Gung University in July 1997.

And in order to educate and shape our students to be diligent, perseverant, frugal, and trustworthy and well-versed in both theory and practice, we have instituted an extracurricular practicum system and been working closely with Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, the Formosa Plastics Group, and other institutions to conduct work-study programs.
The developmental goal of our university is to turn from a teaching oriented university to research oriented. We will continue to improve the quality of the teaching staff, equipments, and instruction, as well as to let students to have more opportunities of engaging in humanity studies. In taking advantage of Formosa Plastics Group's abundant manufacturing and medical service resources, Chang Gung University aims to be a first-rate internationally renowned university that prepares high standard professional talents in the fields of medical science, high technology, and knowledge management.
Mission Statement of Chang Gung University
During the period of 1970s, the quality and improvement of healthcare in Taiwan did not match that of the economy of Taiwan. Because of his concern of this disparity and because of his belief that a successful enterprise should give what it obtained from the society back to the society, Mr. Yung-Ching Wang, the founder of the Formosa Plastics Group, established Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in 1976. With its many pioneering and innovative policies and practices, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital opened a new chapter of the history of healthcare in Taiwan in the ensuing years. Mr. Yung-Ching Wang also determined that there was a serious shortage of quality medical professionals in Taiwan; he subsequently founded the Chang Gung Medical College in 1987 aimed at training more and better medical professionals. With later addition of the College of Engineering and College of Management, the Chang Gung Medical College was upgraded to Chang Gung University in September of 1997.
Diligence, Perseverance, Frugality and Trustworthiness is the motto of Chang Gung University, which reminds and encourages our students and faculty to maintain a simple and hardworking lifestyle, always in pursuit of excellence and never satisfied with the second best. To achieve this goal, Chang Gung University developed close collaborations with industry for both research and training. Educational Believes and Practice
Our faculty members aim to teach knowledge and moral conduct as well as theory and practice. Our aim is to train individuals who can put ideas into practice, who will study all their lives, and who want to contribute to society. In order to accomplish this, we are actively recruiting and hiring expert specialists and scholars to serve at our school. We offer an outstanding environment for research and teaching, supported by ample research funding. Our grants and awards ensure that our instructors and researchers can devote their full attention to their work. As a team, we hope to achieve the following goals:
1. Emphasis is placed on practical instruction. In addition to special courses designed to incorporate case studies and internships, we will offer programs in collaboration with other institutions or businesses. We aim for a perfect combination of theory and practice so that students can learn the virtue of a diligent and down-to-earth attitude.
2. We will maintain a minimum number of students relative to instructors to ensure the highest possible teaching quality.
3. Instruction assigns priority to problem solving. Students are encouraged to take the initiative to seek out problems and their solutions.
We regard it as our mission to promote interdisciplinary research projects and the creation of new academic knowledge. We want Chang Gung University to be known as a research-oriented institution.
